Show HN: Lookback – capture the stories behind your photos
Like many others, I rely on photos to document my memories. Over time, I’ve come to realize that they’re not very good at it. Memories need stories, and photos can’t tell stories. Lookback is my take on what I think a better solution looks like.
It’s basically a photo sharing app that lets you attach video messages (stories) to photos and share them privately. When your invites watch your memory, they'll hear your story play while scrolling through your photos, just like they would if you were looking at the photos together in-person. They can reply by adding their own photos and video messages, creating a shared memory of stories and photos that you can tap into and relive anytime you want.
Now instead of looking at old photos and wishing I remembered more, I can look at old photos and hear my friends and family relive every detail.
Looking forward to feedback from the HN community.
- csw-001 4y agoThis is really neat! Quick question/thought - if the aim is 20yrs of longevity, then what's the future-proofing here for users? For example, what are my export and private backup options? My family has been looking for, and trying apps like this for a while, and we've been burnt by several apps either going out of business, being sold, or "pivoting". Our latest struggle was with Cocoon, which we loved, but has been "bought" - which really means gone dormant until it finally stops working. Having our content stuck time and again has led us to a "no more walled gardens" rule on our photo and memory sharing.
- natechamp 4y agoYup I have felt the pain of this too! You can download/export the memories you share as well as the memories shared with you by others. Are there any other private backup options you'd like to see?
- csw-001 4y agoThat's awesome! I'd love to see backups to private S3 buckets. That's where our photos and videos currently get backed up. We also make heavy use of Integromat to glue our various clouds together. But you might take that all with a grain of salt - we are a relatively nerdy group, not sure how "average" those use model would be.
- natechamp 4y agoLol yea I was thinking about a google photos integration but private s3 buckets is next level. Integromat is next next level :)
- slang800 4y agoCan I download the video/photo content for offline storage? I don't want to spend a bunch of time recording memories if it's all going to be lost when this app shuts down in a couple years.
- natechamp 4y agoYes - the photos/videos you share (and the ones other people share with you) are uploaded and stored in AWS. You can download/export them - you wouldn't need to do this with the photos you add since you obviously already have them on your device but video recordings and any photos other people share with you can be downloaded.
- bflatau 4y agoHi I love this and have been working on something similar off and on over the years. I'd love to connect if interested. You can reach me at the e-mail in my profile. Awesome stuff!
- natechamp 4y agoAwesome I will hit you up!
