The sad state of Linux desktop diversity: 21 environments, just 2 designs
- aurizon 4y agoPure evolution, the bad ones fibbled off and the good ones converged to 2 forks with the 21 designs grabbing this and that share
- thanatos519 4y agoLet's talk about the sad state of MacOS and Windows desktop diversity!
- phendrenad2 4y agoI think it's eminently reasonable to expect that an operating system specifically designed to be highly modular, which is built by a diverse variety of people all over the world with different wants and needs, would have more GUI variance than a top-down authoritarian corporate OS.
- rvz 4y agoTLDR: In conclusion, reimplementing the same old desktop model over and over again doesn't help anyone and it just wastes a huge amount of talent and effort. No wonder the Linux Desktop ecosystem is still struggling to take off. Out of all of those attempts, ChromeOS seems to have learned something from Windows and macOS; much so that Google is considering to replace it with their own OS (Fuchsia). They've somewhat 'used' Linux merely as a test run for their own OS.
- kramerger 4y agoWhat has Fuchsia to do with this discussion? It's a kernel, it doesn't even have a UI.
- rvz 4y ago> What has Fuchsia to do with this discussion? Everything. > It's a kernel, it doesn't even have a UI. Nope. Fuchsia is a complete OS and isn't the 'kernel'. Zircon is the kernel. And yes it has a UI. Otherwise, why is it able to run Chrome all of a sudden? - kramerger 4y agoThis comes out extremely superficial. A lot of things has happened lately and many multi-platform users would consider latest gnome better than osx and win10. I don't know about kde but gnome has worked for years to simplify the DE, make it look nicer and run smoother. But the author only notices that the menu is on top and the dock on left??
