Edit: I just followed the link from the other comment about contacting support… > To get phone, chat, or email support for your legacy free account at [mydomain.com], you need to upgrade to Google Workspace So I can’t contact them until the “upgrade” takes effect, and I get charged for it?!

You don't need to get in actual contact with support. It's not clear from the linked page, but when you go to the (?) icon on your admin page there's an automated click-through flow to revert to legacy - I just did it for my account.
