As a tech and machine learning maximalist I'm frustrated with how haphazardly Tesla is approaching self driving. This is not a technology that should be QA'd consumer-first. On top of that their approach of ditching LIDAR and other sensors is shooting themselves in the foot.
Tesla is in danger of putting the entire AV industry back by ~5 years just through loss of reputation. Regulators and AV pessimists will jump on the opportunity to use Tesla as an example of why these vehicles should be completely banned from public roads. Cruise, Waymo, Zoox, et al. are testing and rolling out responsibly while Tesla is using their customer base as crash test dummies.

- masklinn 4y agoYeah we've never heard that before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7oZ-AQszEI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7oZ-AQszEI Musk has been claiming full self-driving to be just around the corner for 9 years straight. Every year. But I'm sure this time it's going to happen. It's bound to eventually right? (wrong)
- 0x500x79 4y agoThe trick is its "Fully Self-Driving" TM. Which doesn't mean what the rest of the industry means by that.
- bcrosby95 4y agoHeh yeah, they'll just rename autopilot to "Fully Self-Driving", then act all confused when people think its fully self driving.
- belter 4y agoAs in you Fully Self-Drive...Yourself.
- somethoughts 4y agoPerhaps FSD is actually a recursive GNU style acronym - "FSD Self Driving" - an easter egg for those in the know.

- lolc 4y agoThen hurry up with that rep, because one can't downvote old posts.
- belter 4y agoBy the number of down votes it seems many needed the sarcasm tag...I take offense that you though I would take Elon Musk seriously :-))
- cozzyd 4y agoWell, the technology is ready, but the regulators aren't going to let us slam into other cars yet because they are humorless troglodytes.

- LeoPanthera 4y ago> On top of that their approach of ditching LIDAR Tesla never had LIDAR. Their older cars have radar.
- kube-system 4y agoI believe the above commenter was referring to Elon’s insistence that LIDAR not be used, while many in rest of the are using it.
- alanh 4y agoThat’s not what ditching means.
- deleted 4y ago[deleted]
- turtledove 4y agoRejecting the need for the technology at the design stage is ditching it. It was just ditched at design, not ditched at implementation.
- dvngnt_ 4y agoi disagree. it means to leave or end association with. you can't ditch something you was never with
- the8472 4y agoSo far regulators seem to be smart enough to distinguish between different vendors.
- drewzero1 4y agoNot just their customer base, but everybody else on or near the road.
- rvz 4y agoThere is no denying it. Even the system admitted its fault and said it was sorry. At this point, it is impossible to defend this contraption. This thing needs to be investigated rather than turning people into crash dummies for beta testing safety-critical software that doesn't even work. Might as well call it 'Fools Self Driving', since it doesn't work as advertised even when it still requires the driver to have eyes on the road at all times; which by paying attention and intervening, that has just saved his life.
- imoverclocked 4y agoI’m a fan of “Face Sure Destruction” but fools also seems appropriate.
- steveylang 4y agoThey are going to start with Insane and Ludicrous self-driving modes, before graduateing to 'Fools Self Driving.'
- SheinhardtWigCo 4y agoThe important difference is that the other companies can back up their safety claims with compelling data. I'm optimistic that the outcome will be a regulatory regime that basically codifies the approach taken by Cruise and Waymo.
