I consider beaming energy to earth from space a wishful thinking for three reasons. Geo-political issue of security and costs of maintaining that, environmental impacts and addressing full consequence of it, technological challenges.
In my view if we can make carbon-fuels (oil) circular, synthetic-fuels from carbon capture- that seem very pragmatic and viable step forward starting from today. One, the entire distribution, fueling infrastructure, and transport technology is super-mature (even today new CE are developed that will improve car efficiency above 60%, (electric drive-train is about 80%)), and mainly it already exists. We already know so much about environmental costs of maintaining it, its intended and unintended consequences. Also there is no extra pollution in trying to build completely new infrastructure which we do not yet know what kind of drawbacks and unintended consequence it will have.
From this skeleton of a counter-argument, FF are far from dead, they are going to stay in the future (within a mixture of solutions of cause).
