Software updates for the Boeing B747-400 delivered in 3.5in floppies
- raxxorraxor 4y ago3.5″ floppies were a bit before my time but I still know them. I would be seriously concerned about data integrity and about some magnet flipping random bits. Sure, there are mechanism to detect such errors but there are always parts that could slip through. A checksum for your firmware binary blob doesn't help if the config file switched rudder and elevators. Very like unrealistic but I seriously would trust a cheap USB stick far more than a floppy.
- Nextgrid 4y ago> if the config file switched rudder and elevators This is for the navigation database, not the actual firmware.
- Arnt 4y agoYes, unrealistic. Those are 1.4MB floppies, meaning there are a little over twenty million bits that can be wrong. Most of them either don't matter or render the floppy unreadable, there are checksums for the rest. So you're really talking about ten million checksummed bits. That's not very much.
