Just regarding OpenAI's pricing, the usage is paid for at the end of the month (Stripe's pricing would indeed make it unfeasible to charge for each cent individually, hence they bulk-charge at the end of the month). I could imagine The Economist charging me at the end of the month for the 20 articles * 10 cent I consumed.
