Leaving it at home may not be feasible if the student needs to take the metro and they use the ticket apps. I'd ask whether I can sit at the front, put my phone in my backpack, and store (lock) the backpack in front of the desk so that I can't access it without standing up and making noise. So far no professor took issue with this.
