Did the term “bit by bit” originate before or after computers?
Or before/after Shannon’s paper on a mathematical theory of communication?
- clouddrover 4y agoBefore.
- allears 4y agoQuite the opposite -- the computer term "bit" was named after the common word for a very small piece of something, from an ancient tongue called Old English. Just google the etymology of it, there's a wealth of information out there.
- duped 4y agoIt's actually a pun - bit is short for "binary digit."
- Normille 4y agoIs this a serious question?
- asplake 4y agoApparently the phrase was first recorded in 1849, and the word is very much older: https://www.dictionary.com/browse/bit--by--bit https://www.dictionary.com/browse/bit--by--bit
