Return-to-Office Plans Unravel as Workers Rebel in Tight Job Market
- EddieDante 4y agoI love my home office. It's quite, comfortable, has a view of my backyard, and now that spring is here there's usually at least one cat in my windowsill. Nobody's going to give me shit if I decide to get up and stretch, or crank out a set of pushups, crunches, or bodyweight squats. I can prep lunch ahead of time with my pressure cooker and have a fresh, healthy lunch every day instead of having to settle for sandwiches, microwaved leftovers, or overpriced fast "food". Oh, and I can step outside and talk to my neighbors. Now, let me see if I've got this straight. I should give all that up and go back to driving 30-60 minutes (depending on traffic) to a building that's too cold in winter and too hot in summer so that I can spend half the workday on Zoom/Skype/Teams calls while sharing a desk in a half-height cubicle with another developer who's trying to do the same in an open-plan space full of dozens of other people all making remote calls of their own? Oh, and risk a breakthrough COVID-19 infection because I can't be sure if the people not wearing masks are vaccinated and have their boosters? I don't get paid enough for that shit. You probably don't get paid enough for that shit, either. Jamie Dimon and his cronies might get paid enough for that shit, and I wish them the joy of it, but they can damn well count me out.
