Why do people on Hacker News need Medium? Don't they have their own blogs? Can't they build and run their own websites? Or does the desire for "reach" trump the need for autonomy and a place of one's own on the internet?
- PaulHoule 4y agoI could see how somebody would find setting up a blog to be a hassle and find marketing a blog even more of a hassle. Still I wouldn't be caught dead on Medium. I just wouldn't want to be seen as being at the same level as the rest of the dreck on Medium... The greatest "Eternal September" story of all time.
- EddieDante 4y agoMy blog is just plain text files and a RSS feed generated with a shell script. My build system is a makefile. I deploy to nearlyfreespeech.net with rsync, and every few months I throw twenty bucks into my account to cover storage/bandwidth/CPU. I literally push updates to my host by running "make install". That's minimal hassle. As for marketing my blog: my blog is wall-to-wall pornography, fantasies that I write under a pseudonym instead of trying to act out because I'm happily married and would prefer to remain that way. Everything I wrote there, I wrote one-handed -- and it ought to be read one-handed too. Why would I market it, except perhaps by syndicating posts to literotica.com with a link back to the original?
