The thing about the pods and the bugs isn't that choosing to eat bugs or live in pods is inherently bad or wrong -- it is about intentionally creating a world of such oppressive scarcity that all of the people who are not the inter-generational wealthy elite have no choice but to live in the pods and eat the bugs because the opportunity to do better has been destroyed.
This is often summarized by restating the quote often attributed to Klaus Schwab (though it is unclear to me if Schwab ever actually said it in any context): "You will own nothing and be happy".
- version_five 4y agoI think there is a difference between a world where you're stuck doing something and one where that thing is available. Your quote resonates with me, I hate the idea of e.g. not being able to own a car and having some subscription thing instead designed to maximally extract money from me. But I still think it's a good thing that subscription car sharing exists. We just need some kind of oversight (which i know is easier said than done) to prevent the world from turning into some kind of corporatized wasteland where we're essentially all matrix inhabitants that just exist for the XaaS revenue we provide. But solving that isn't helped by shutting down free enterprises.
