I don't think it's necessarily about consciousness per se, but rather about emotions or "irrationality". Life has no purpose so clearly there is no rational reason to continue living/existing. A super-rational agent must know this. I think that intelligence and emotions, in particular fear of death or desire to continue living, must evolve in parallel.
