U.S. cities are backing off banning facial recognition as crime rises
- nobodyandproud 4y agoDoes it even work, when half the country still wear masks?
- sithadmin 4y agoWearing a mask doesn't preclude functional facial recognition. There's plenty of data above the mask, and recognition systems are increasingly good at working around mask obstruction. Also, mask wearing doesn't do anything for other widely applied approaches such as gait analysis, which is fairly common in areas with a national security concern at play, or a lot of money at stake (particular elements of the financial services industry; casinos, etc.).
- azemetre 4y agoYes, one of the most accurate ways to recognize someone is by their gait (how your body moves when walking). https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/footstep-sensors-identify-people-by-gait/ https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/footstep-sensors-... It's basically your unconscious "finger print."
- mbg721 4y agoSo can criminals just evade detection by using a variety of John Cleese silly-walks?
- pessimizer 4y agoWhy wouldn't the software simply flag everyone doing that?
- aaaaaaaaata 4y ago"Can't flag us all."
- azemetre 4y agoPotentially but something that might be easier is to put a pebble in your shoe or change the soles of your shoes as well. Similar to how certain makeup patterns can hurt facial recognition.
- StanislavPetrov 4y agoWe don't need facial recognition to deal with the crime problem, we need to detain, prosecute and imprison the small number of criminals who are responsible for the overwhelming number of crimes. No matter how well-intentioned "bail reform", "sentencing reform" and "criminal justice reform" may have been, it has resulted in a situation where criminals are free to commit crimes over and over again. Those who are caught are instantly released without bail, charges are often dropped and the few cases that are prosecuted often result in no jail time. Virtually everyone agrees that we should not be locking up non-violent drug offenders and others engaged in "victimless" crimes that mostly should not be crimes at all, but that isn't the situation we find ourselves in. Here in New York assault, larceny, illegal gun possession and a host of other serious crimes in effect go unpunished. Not a day passes when another story of someone committing a murder or other heinous crime is published with a footnote about how that person had been caught for a litany of other recent crimes, carrying an illegal gun, several violent assaults, only to be left free to roam the streets until the inevitable occurred. Having compassion and common sense when it comes to incarceration and criminal justice doesn't mean abandoning law enforcement, but unfortunately that's where we are. Edit: A recent example from today's paper. This guy got only 4 months in jail for robbery in 2016. A few years later he is, as an already convicted felon, caught with an illegal loaded gun - a charge that is not "bail eligible" under the new "bail reform law", and he is released to roam the streets. When he eventually does face the charges, he is allowed to plea them down and avoid incarceration completely, instead being diverted into a "mental health program". Shortly thereafter he is engaged in a shootout with police, with another illegal gun, where he is shot. This time, luckily, no innocent people were killed. This is a situation that is repeated countless times a day around NYC, with armed felons roaming free even after being caught repeatedly with illegal weapons and engaged in other crimes. This is the crime problem, and facial recognition does nothing to address it. https://nypost.com/2022/05/11/bronx-shooter-a-look-at-rameek-smiths-open-gun-case-from-2020/ https://nypost.com/2022/05/11/bronx-shooter-a-look-at-rameek...
- ParksNet 4y agoStop Soros-funded DAs. Alvin Bragg, DA of New York, was funded by 'Color of Change' PAC, which received a $1million donation from George Soros: https://nypost.com/2022/01/04/alvin-braggs-green-light-for-anarchy/ https://nypost.com/2022/01/04/alvin-braggs-green-light-for-a...
- nojito 4y agoFacial Recognition is a great solution when compared to hiring FTE's sit and watching videotapes or hire crappy cops to patrol areas.
