Whew, I just went through the process of getting a Permanent Residency in Japan, applying after working here for a bit over 4 years, and being accepted this spring, at a little under 5 years in. It was stressful, but after reading this, I have to admit that immigration in Japan seems like a walk in a park, at least if you're privileged enough to speak Japanese and have a high-paying job.
