If that's true, their fundraising was less focused. I made one or two donations to them in the late 90s or early 2000s, and got piles of junk mail for every liberal cause for decades after. Never made any other political donation, except to the EFF, so I know it's the ACLU that distributed my name (I've made EFF donations from other addresses, and have never gotten any extra junk due to that).
