Senator Hawley wants to punish Disney by taking copyright law back to 1909
- h2odragon 4y agoI don't see the need for discriminating against companies over $X size or whatever. Let's just fix the fuckup that Copyright has become for everybody. I see the motivation; this is purely a PR stunt with no intention of endangering the cash cow of "intellectual property exploitation" which pays for so much politics. Still, this seems a good opening to revive all the arguments from the last couple times copyright was redefined in law to be ever more perpetual.
- SilverBirch 4y agoThis is the entire point of the bill though - the discrimination against companies over 150Bn market cap is there for one reason. There are 72 companies with a market cap over 150Bn. Of those companies there is 1 company that has the Industry Classification System code of 5121 or 71. That 1 company is Disney. That entire clause is just "Let's find a way to specify Disney without saying Disney". If there were a company in the entertainment business with a market cap of over 150Bn and it's name was Entertainment United then this bill would've been ammended to "Over 150Bn, ICS code of 5121 and name starts with D". This bill is nothing to do with a serious conversation about copyright. It's interrupting any conversation about Copyright to punish Disney.
