Sure, but it doesn't seem written as if it will be handled the same way, but for the owner it is. That one morning you get into the car and it has applied an update. You look at the changelog or what that list should be called, and it will say "new fart in Dolby Stereo" or "Fixes for display".
So if you want to get anti-EV people riled up, you can write it up as if it was super important to have the middle screen show stuff and that 170k EV cars will have to line up outside of service places, when in fact the next fart-update will also have something to not screw up the screen in some cases.
Perhaps it is just "this is how car news was written up when I learned the trade of writing about cars long time ago" or something, but when cars (and cell phones and tons of other devices) have OTA updates things change and it would be nice if journalists could be within 10 years of the news they write about.
Having to "recall" 170k cell phones by having them brought to the shop again for some firmware update would be news in 2022. Having the cell phone update over night and ask you if it should restart for update has zero news value. Noone would buy magazines that post an article everytime an IOS or Android brand phone sees an update as if it was anything important in itself.
- nikau 4y agoI guess the difference is recalls are tracked by a regulatory body to ensure they are implemented within a certain time frame due to the safety nature of them. There is also typically communication to the owners explaining the recall and interim advice before it can be fixed. Car manufacturers have had TSBs for years for improvements that weren't safety or essential, they would essentially flash the ECU or inspect/change components whenever the car was next in for service and the car owner only notified of the change if they had raised an explicit complaint related to the TSB.
