If it was a jet plane, the ending might have been quite different.

Jets are basically giant computers usually with far more capable autopilot and often even auto-landing capabilities. I imagine it would be far easier to talk a non-experienced pilot down in a jet by telling them what knobs to turn and switches to flip without them even needing to ever touch the yoke.
