Communicating that you don't want to take a side is tantamount to jumping into the debate. Completely idiotic. Staying out of it is a great strategy as long as you keep a low profile. If you're parading around saying "oh look at me, I don't like to take sides" then yeah, everyone's gonna think you're a massive prick. Just keep your mouth shut, keep a stone face, and try to be as positive as possible.
