UC and CSU are unaffordable, and a 4-year degree isn’t the only way to succeed

- smt88 4y agoThis is the worst kind of confirmation bias. Even worse, it's just wrong. Both of them were born into families with important connections and money. They're abnormally intelligent and had good educations before college. Most importantly, both of them benefitted from going to Harvard. They met exceptional people there, and those people were vital to their success. Gates and Ballmer met there, for example. Any dropout can certainly run the world, but the average person is far better positioned to succeed by going to college.
- t-3 4y agoThey started companies. They didn't have to work for anyone else. They got into their fields relatively early, while large and crusty competitors left their lunch on the table for the taking. If you don't have money to be an entrepreneur, hiring is now done by pattern-matching algorithms and good luck getting to an interview without a degree or experience in the field (and good luck finding an entry level position). If you do get there, you'll most likely be competing against credentialed and experienced people for the position. It's absolutely a good idea to get a degree, but taking the cheap route is probably ok as long as you learn your stuff properly.
