Some of Jim Browning and Mark Robers antics seems grossly irresponsible and illegal.

Not as much as the people getting retirees to send 5-figure sums to them in cash... In a better world, we would have law enforcement action instead of YouTube pranking. But, similarly to ransomware, we don't seem to see any legal response proportional to the damage done.

Hopefully the vigilantes took into account the possibility that the prank could affect innocent neighbors (eg: by also infesting their property with roaches or rats).

I agree these particular antics, while deserved, are irresponsible and illegal. Not that I expect that kind of mind-blowing nuance (ie: that a thing can have both good and bad aspects) to go down well on the internet.

So, I am curious as to the opinion of any Indian HN readers who might comment on this. Does it seem likely that more publicity would result in more legal action being taken against these scam call centers?

Unlikely. The lack of jobs in India is quite staggering(see below links).Money earned through immoral means is actually respected as hustle. And in this case the victims are distant foreigners who many Indians believe have looted their ancient wealth. The police are a part of it too and get their commissions as well. Imo unless the US govt itself applies pressure nothing is really gonna happen. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-60165825 https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-60165825 https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/economy/majority-of-indias-900-million-workforce-stop-looking-for-jobs-8405971.html https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/economy/majority-...

    > Money earned through immoral means is actually respected as hustle. This is utter bullshit.

Scambaiter is also an excellent account, he has technical knowledge so his videos have some good content about the operational details and even footage of these fraud centers. https://www.youtube.com/c/Scambaiter https://www.youtube.com/c/Scambaiter
