Queen Elizabeth will not open UK Parliament this year, Buckingham Palace says
- jleyank 4y agoSeems prudent for commonwealth countries to dust off some old paperwork, and for Charles and William to remain in the uk and try to minimize being together. The other councillors of state are pariahs, one of whom is in the us. Replacing either would mean Andrew’s daughter(s)… I would bet in Australia or particularly the Caribbean or African countries to go republic, with Canada and New Zealand going slower. It’s time. Royals are either in country or in the history books.
- jfengel 4y agoThere's a lot of people in line before Andrew and his daughters. After Chuck and Bill comes Bill's three kids, George, Charlotte, and Louis. Then comes Harry, who isn't so much a "pariah" as "tired of being hounded by the tabloids". There are certainly a lot of people who don't like his wife, but he is a man of duty (having served in the military -- for real, not just putting on a pretty coat), and if called on would serve as monarch. It's wildly unlikely that it would get that far. If it did, it would only be after such an extraordinary tragedy that it's hard to conceive of how people would react.
- jfengel 4y agoAddendum: Elizabeth's great-grandchildren are too young to rule in their own right. Under the Regency Act, the next over-18 in line would serve as regent. That would be Harry, followed by Andrew. Andrew is kind of persona-non-grata, so I'm not seeing that going over well. I don't know what would happen, but fortunately, it's incredibly unlikely.
