The Sports-Betting Boom Is a Moral Disaster
- tamaharbor 4y agoNY State lottery advertising - Then: “Bet with your head, not over it.” Now: “All you need is a dollar and a dream.”
- nh23423fefe 4y agoPeople fail expected value calculations all the time. "Then" was just CYA
- allturtles 4y agoI think at minimum legislation is needed to restrict the advertising of sports book apps. Anyone who enjoys watching sports on TV (including young kids) is now getting saturated with come-ons for "no risk" betting.
- andrewflnr 4y agoIs it just me or does this article contain no actual arguments to support its title? I don't even necessarily disagree, but I expect more than rueful handwringing if you're going to bother publishing an article about it.
- allturtles 4y agoThis is the argument: > Before the legalization of online gambling, the great majority of Americans would go their entire life without being tempted to seek out a bookie or fly to the handful of jurisdictions in which in-person sports betting was permitted. What millions now face are endless deceptive advertisements aired during the most-watched television broadcasts in America, inviting them to risk their money on platforms funded by venture capitalists rather than by organized crime.
- andrewflnr 4y agoOk, just me. I assert the article would have been better focusing on the deceptiveness than bloviating about... whatever it was, but at least it's not completely devoid of logical content.
