Let's say you have two possible projects: X is investment in growth, which will result in increase of your revenue in the short term, and Y is investment in reduction of risks which will increase the value of your assets in the long term. If interest rates are low, borrowing money for Y or for both projects becomes more tangible option. If interest rates are high and you are an optimist, you will choose to borrow money for X. Based on this logic, higher interest rates would expose the optimism of the investors better. Whether there is a causal link between them or not, that is an open question.

- ivan_gammel 4y agoIn Europe we do not have "safe places in colleges". It is an US phenomenon, that has nothing to do with risk aversion - on the contrary, it is based on the optimistic assumption that society is generally mature enough to own firearms and you only need to mitigate some "edge cases". True risk aversion would be to regulate the gun ownership, education and welfare the same way as it is done in Europe, where mass shootings are much less common. As for the interest rates, I don't really get how do you connect wealth and loss aversion here. Interest rates are not taxing wealth, in fact lower interest rates are resulting in lower yields and even in the reduction of the capital (e.g. Germans keep a lot of savings on their bank accounts, yet they have to pay for this service now thanks to negative interest rates).

- uxp100 4y agoSo safe spaces have nothing to do with firearms. It’s sort of a concept about the norms of conversation. So if a support group was a safe space it essentially means you’re not supposed to contradict people even if they’re wrong. Circa 2014 this was a big boogeyman, I think triggered by protests at a college in Mississippi (?) where the library was called a safe space for POCs, and white people where not allowed in, and some teacher fought a student to keep them out. That’s not what a safe space is, and uh, you’re entitled to use your schools resources, but anyway, I guess I think the above poster is driving at some symmetry there, but it’s pretty much unrelated to the conversation and only will derail it.

- hash07e 4y agoWell you dont have free speech in Europe too. Because everything against the current narrative is "hate speech".

- fallingfrog 4y agoWe don't have "safe spaces in colleges". I graduated from college recently and never witnessed any such thing. How long has it been since you've set foot on a college campus? This is a fabrication by fox news to promote contempt for young people, who are dealing with real problems like sky high costs of education, health care, and housing, and who don't deserve this kind of disrespect. Young people are survivors. They're a lot more resilient than you think. It's stunning to me how many people just swallow this kind of rhetoric without any sort of internal reality check. Do you think your own kids act this way? Do their friends? No? So what's the disconnect here?
- I_DRINK_KOOLAID 4y ago> We don't have "safe spaces in colleges". I graduated from college recently and never witnessed any such thing. How long has it been since you've set foot on a college campus? Just the fact that there are no brawls, no animosity or electricity in the air means that the whole campus is a safe space. Ever since the stone age putting a bunch of young people together in an enclosed space meant huge social volatility and an energetic exchange of ideas. That just doesn't happen anymore. > who are dealing with real problems like sky high costs of education, health care, and housing, and who don't deserve this kind of disrespect. Young people are survivors. A median GenZ will live well into their 90s...honestly that's a huge problem, human brains are made to think about tomorrow, next week at maximum, because they developed during a time when you could die at a moment's notice. When you stop thinking about tomorrow and you project yourself 10 or 20 or even 50 years into the future, that's when crazy things start happening such as you saying that young people are survivors. There is so much abundance, more than ever, that people don't even value it.
- fallingfrog 4y ago"Just the fact that there are no brawls, no animosity or electricity in the air..." This is deranged. You want students to be starting fistfights on campus? That's what counts as dialogue to you? The rest of what you wrote is essentially word salad, and not cogent enough to warrant a response. I'm directly telling you right now that you have no idea what you're talking about, and you are in total ignorance. Think of it this way: you are someone who read about something in a biased newspaper, and I am someone who saw it firsthand and I know, for sure, that you're wrong, and I'm telling you so, as a fact, not an opinion.
