Faith requires an object. On what was this faith based? It was based on Putin. It couldn't have been placed on the Russian people, as Putin decides everything.
And what did Putin do? He attacked Georgia and took part of it. He attacked Ukrain and took part of it, and then backed a war there for several years.
Oh, and all of the people who he assassinated by poisoning them. People in other countries.
How could the former German Chancellor go work for him after all of that? How could Merkel turn off all the nukes to ensure Russian gas would be the only viable alternative?
In other words, this was not good faith. It was misplaced faith, and obviously so, as even Trump pointed out.
