No. The virus is going to win this biological arms race we challenged it to. What politicians and scientists want is not relevant to COVID.
It's pretty hilarious to me that some scientists and governments are pretending that infections are the drivers of mutations. Which may be true, but they would be relatively benign.
Instead they are counterintuitively selecting the parts of the virus that must evolve. It's no surprise that the R0 keeps rising. It's no surprise that a random lineage jumped to prominence.
WE selected for these traits in COVID. I can't think of a better way to engineer a virus to become more infectios and completely endemic than to knowingly and willfully try as hard as possible to kill it off knowing that failure is inevitable.
