Why is it OK to be Prejudiced against Mormons?
- noja 15y agoBecause many people regard it as a cult? The same reason goes for Scientology.
- getonit 15y agoPrejudice needs defining as some people hold it to include the notion that it is unreasonable, rather than just pre-formed. Both definitions are found in most dictionaries. -- Myself, I'm prejudiced (in the with-a-reason sense) against anyone who demonstrates compartmentalised thinking, in that I don't trust their decision-making or problem-solving abilities. They hold faith to be of value, and I don't. They use a tool that I have banned from my toolkit, and it leaves any output of theirs suspicious to me. Doubly so if they're proud of faith, which applies to religion in general. Mormons are no exception, and in fact are quite the example of the pride in faith that is such a red flag to me. I'm aware that compartmentalisation doesn't mean that people can't think perfectly reasonably and arrive at the correct conclusions from available evidence, and that I can amke mistakes and arrive at a wrong conclusion - they're not on a blacklist, they've just been removed from the whitelist and we'll go from there. "Science adjust its beliefs according to what's observed; Faith is the denial of observation so that belief can be preserved" - Tim Minchin, Storm.
- dalke 15y agoIt's of course hard to read that without thinking about how it's published in the newspaper run by the Church of Christ, Scientist. Quoting Wikipedia: There have also been periodic tensions with both mainstream and fundamentalist Christians, who think the religion is aligned with Gnosticism or is a cult, and fault it for departing from traditional Christian doctrine. Of particular issue is the deity of Jesus, which Christian Science denies; and a view that Christian Science does teach, that God is not the creator of finite (material) existence and its concomitant suffering, sin and death. The Christian Science Monitor is meant for a secular audience, and has good news coverage. But this is a commentary, and the people who think of the Latter Day Saints as being a cult likely also think that the Church of Christ, Scientist is a cult.
