I don't buy this explanation. You'd think a team doing something groundbreaking and experimental, under public glare, would atleast not miss an obvious thing like considering whether an organ is healthy - especially when it is from a different species. I mean, germ theory is the foundation of modern medicine. If this had happened with a normal transplant procedure (human to human) wouldn't the doctors / hospitals been sued? (I know there are cases where tainted blood transfusions have resulted in such suits).
