Asians (who were historically oppressed by the US government) are in power? Let's face it, culture and cultural focus on certain values has an impact down the line on test scores. You don't see the DEI crowd talking about black culture favoring athletics leading black people to be "overrepresented" in sports, but they'll talk all the time about how Asians are "overrepresented".
- jeffwask 4y agoSome Asians, right? Asia is a pretty big bucket and the experiences of the Japanese, Koreans, Vietnamese, Chinese, Indians, Pakistani, etc are all going to be wildly different and have vast cultural differences. However, I do agree culture can overcome oppression and there are shining examples of this in recent immigrants from Asia but I think a good argument could be made for applying this to earlier populations of immigrants as well for example Jewish immigrants. So I question, is it the culture of where they came from or the culture of immigrants in general? I haven't done it but I can imagine picking up and leaving everything you know must be terrifying and the process of coming to that decision and then executing it changes you forever. It changes you to your core and is part of that making sure you do everything to set your children up for success so they never have to go through what you did. Are immigrants more focused on education because they had to crawl through shit and fire to get where they are? Class perpetuates a cycle of poor education because school funding is tied to local taxes. Poorer neighborhoods, poorer schools, worse education and the cycle perpetuates. A cycle that at least in parts of the US is 100% intentionally designed to subjugate minorities and immigrants. It started almost immediately after the enslaved population was set free. Redlining, gerrymandering and far worse... These same controls have been leveraged on populations throughout history to keep them in a perpetual state of wage slavery. After enough generations pass through the cycle, culture may not be enough and class divides become deeper. Culture supplementing education also only works if you have parents/relatives to help. A single mother immigrant working two jobs will have a significantly harder time supplementing a poor education in the classroom. Over-represented is just a polite way of being a racist. It's cleaned up white supremacy packaged for the masses. They might as well restrict the number of blondes... i fucking hate it. There was a time not long ago when white American culture glorified science and education, now it seems to glorify ignorance and greed and quite frankly it terrifies me for the future.
