This is a net positive for society, as broadening the availability of content for consumers via ad-supported means more sharing of ideas, news, and entertainment. The author’s spine must be in pretty bad shape after bending backwards so far to find a way to call ads “a net positive for society”. That’s what’s going to better society: to see ads for bubblegum while binge watching reality shows based on fleeting internet memes[1].
