Ask HN: Why is keybase.io still up?
What purpose does it serve these days?
- arthurcolle 5y agoNone, it is a relic of a time long past
- tony-allan 5y agoSomeone is still updating the code... https://github.com/orgs/keybase/repositories?type=all https://github.com/orgs/keybase/repositories?type=all
- selfhoster11 5y agoLiterally the same purpose it always did? Unless I missed something, Keybase hasn't actually been shut down.
- aliswe 5y agoI'm missing some backstory here, should it be shut down?
- aaaaaaaaata 5y agoI won't use it if Zoom owns it.
- Centrino 5y agoJust one example of the continuing use of Keybase: the Chia Network uses Keybase Chat as its sole official communication tool for its community. More than 20,000 members and hundreds of messages per day. Why Keybase and not Telegram? Because identities can not be faked on Keybase. Private messaging on Telegram (and on Discord) is full of scams because of faked identities. Another example of possible use: the Keybase File System, for private or public sharing of files.
- Avamander 5y agoIt's being maintained by Zoom, they use it internally as well.
- theschmed 5y agoI still use the client, I think if they do shut it down they’ll provide a generous timeline etc.
