The A.I. Of Doom
- IE6 4y agoRelated: Decino on YouTube has a very good series on DOOM implementation logic with real-world demos: https://www.youtube.com/c/decino https://www.youtube.com/c/decino
- mrguyorama 4y agoI really enjoy how he makes a point to dig through the actual code and show it off to viewers, often with maps made specifically to demonstrate situations. Some of his videos would probably make a good companion to the Doom Black Book
- ngcc_hk 4y agoFSm … wonder any those Paip aima has any influence. And any lisp copy closed to that.

- taejavu 4y agoI'm interested in hearing what you have to say, could you create an alt account and post with it?
- teaearlgrey_hot 4y agoThis is my alt account. It’s mainly a story about how Romero likes to drink, Carmack has a bit of an inclination towards chemistry and explosives and a not-so-harebrained scheme for modern-day piracy. I’m so tired of typing out posts which I consider thoughtful and meaningful to deal with censorship and awful nonsense so I will decline. It would get downvoted anyway because it’s 100% not sensitive to sensitive people’s inclinations anyway. I cannot use the words I want to use because I would be censored or banned for them and I will include this rider to remind people this website actively policies TONE, CONTENT, and CONVERSATION. They may ban me for using this rider, or censor me for it. Do not forget you are not free.
- SgtBastard 4y agoAre you ok, friend?

- veltas 4y agoI think it's the Irumodic Syndrome
- SgtBastard 4y agoI hate that I had to Google this - time to hang up my pointy ears.
- andai 4y agoJust post a blog and submit it. HN comment rules apply to comments, not submitted content. Beat the system!!
- teaearlgrey_hot 4y agoDOOM was a game about breaking the rules of the system, and considering even religion to be a system. Religion, southern politics, John Carmack, coding, a perverse need for beer supplies and a politically maligned target means that I would be attempting to incite a flame war! In fact, merely by saying that I could tell a story which is controversial, humorous, and also part of the local legend is Inciting others to intense emotional reactions already. It also might offend the money here as it has stealing in it. Which is likely against the guidelines. I cannot use the words I want to use because I would be censored or banned for them and I will include this rider to remind people this website actively policies TONE, CONTENT, and CONVERSATION. They may ban me for using this rider, or censor me for it. Do not forget you are not free.

- gattilorenz 4y ago> this website actively policies TONE, CONTENT, and CONVERSATION And luckily so, that's what keeps it different from the cesspool of Twitter.

- zwirbl 4y agoYou seem to know pretty well what's good for me/people, got any tips?
- atoav 4y agoWe are never free. There is always consequences of one's actions and there is always the actions of others limiting the choices we can make. And if there are no others it is the environment we live in that limits is possible. This is what living in an world means. The written and unwritten rules we as a society establish for our places are usually the limitation of some freedom to protect another. You are not allowed to scream loudly in a library, because then one persons freedom to scream would destroy the freedom of all other visitors to read in peace. Collectively we agreed that we gain freedom by sacrificing certain unfitting behavior. This must not even be rational, it is pure convention by the majority using a place (e.g. think about how the rules in various houses of worship work). Of course one could now argue that you can forbid behavior for arbitrary reasons, without making such a deliberate tradeoff. After all, exactly this is an integral part of authotarian structures all around the world. However in many online places the kind of freedom people argue for is rarely the freedom to eloquently postulate a controversial opinion. More often it is being an asshole to others. And just like in the library example this can and will affect the freedoms of others. Every screaming troll makes a good, productive debate more unlikely, which is why nearly every place where decent online debate happens, bans this kind of behaviour. And this is good. Different places serve different purposes and have therefore their own written and unwritten rules. This in itself is not a problem at all. Don't get me wrong here, but if someone would complain at the swimming pool that we are not allowed to pee into it and are therefore not free, I don't question the pool rules, I question why they want to do that in the first place. If the rules say "no swimming" this would be something different altogether.
- ant6n 4y agoYou can also go to the source of much of this article, the doom book by fabien sanglard. https://fabiensanglard.net/gebbdoom/ https://fabiensanglard.net/gebbdoom/ Btw, much of this state machine based ai already existed for wolfenstein 3d. I don’t think it did line of sight checks, instead using sound carried within and between rooms connected by open doors. U can read about that in Fabiens also fantastic Wolkenstein book: https://fabiensanglard.net/gebbwolf3d/ https://fabiensanglard.net/gebbwolf3d/
- Comevius 4y agoDoom became my favorite game lately since I started going down Doom history with Doomworld. https://www.doomworld.com/25years/ https://www.doomworld.com/25years/ The AI is certainly limited, but the maps too, Doom not being a true 3D engine. The core mechanics is walk into a trigger, it's either a trap or a puzzle. It's really fun, and you don't get the impression that the AI is not up to the task. I however like to play with a mouse, and use modern weapons from Beautiful Doom. Unlike Brutal Doom, Beautiful Doom was careful to preserve the original game. It makes weapons a bit more powerful, but you need to reload them. This makes combat a bit faster, a bit more challenging, minus the use of mouse that makes combat easier. Beautiful Doom has been compatible with every WAD I played so far too. https://www.moddb.com/mods/beautiful-doom-6100 https://www.moddb.com/mods/beautiful-doom-6100 I like to use GZDoom, without texture filtering, and with software sector light mode that emulates the original look, and smooth fuzz style for rendering invisibility. The default options are too bright, and invisibility is too visible. Most maps are designed for the original look too, it's worth approximating it.
