when teaching myself web development in high school it was very straightforward to use the "PortableApps Launcher" from my iPod's hard drive over USB to get me Portable XAMPP, Portable Notepad++, and Portable Firefox to develop locally with, and Portable FileZilla (but also the Notepad++ SFTP plugin) to deploy to my paid host. couldn't have been easier.
