Do you think Artificial Intelligence can be used as a Anti-Suicide Unit and how?
- jstx1 4y agoNo - sensitive, nuanced, human interaction is the last place where I want any algorithms.
- Bostonian 4y agoYes, if the text messages and social media posts of pre-suicidal people systematically differ from those of others, as I think is likely. Is there a data set of say Facebook posts of people who attempted or actually committed suicide along with data for people who did not? If an algorithm were developed to give you warning signs for family members and friends, you could connect with them and see how they are doing.
- rolph 4y agolook at how swatting and welfare checks work out. the abuse mode of such a system would be horrible, being declared mentally ill and perhaps incarcerated in a psych hold, having your reputation destroyed by the stigma, and systemic overtures
- PaulHoule 4y agoThe ratio of people talking about suicide to attempting suicide and then completing suicide is tiny. Emergency room physicians frequently fail to take suicide seriously because they see a population of "frequent fliers" who make ineffective attempts repeatedly to get attention. I had an in-law (a male in his 50s) who attempted suicide by drinking antifreeze, presented at the emergency room, was treated and discharged. Two weeks later he got an appointment with a psychologist, got asked his name and date of birth twenty times, and then went home and hung himself that evening. One could make the case that a suicide attempt is the psychiatric equivalent of a heart attack and needs to be taken just as seriously but really what can you do? You probably could identify some population that is more likely to commit suicide than average but a truly effective intervention might not be possible: send out the cops to see a mentally unstable person, for instance, and either that person or the police could get shot.
