Why daycare is so expensive in the US (Twitter thread)
- legitster 4y ago> Infant daycare ratios are 1 caregiver to 4 infants (0-2). At toddler ages (2-3 months), it grows to 1:6; it's 1:12 for preschool (3-5. This is the full stop. When you are putting an infant in a daycare, you are paying for 1/4 of a person + facilities and overhead. No amount of technological advancement will change this. > But our childcare system has almost no subsidy in the US. The US government spends $500 / toddler in the US (.2% of GDP), compared to .7% of GDP of the average OECD country. This is wrong on two levels. First, most subsidies come from the state level, and some states are very generous. Secondly, the childcare tax credit is now refundable: https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc602 https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc602 . This amounts to a huge subsidy for childcare.
