Maybe I'm cynical, but I thought portable devices would have been more practical by now. How about your phone becomes a keyboard/ mouse and your ipad a display? How about a REPL app, or IDE, or better yet, an Apple-default app that serves a VM environment of any desired language? Pie in the sky.
With the iPad Pro release, Apple says "we want to give you a productivity device" while ignoring that their ecosystem is an ecosystem of toy apps and social-networks.
- ultrarunner 4y agoI remember when I first got an iPad (version 2?). I spent a lot of time traveling at that point, and wanted to write code on it pretty badly. I started research and prototyping pieces of an IDE and ran into not technical limitations, but Apple policy. Ultimately they wouldn’t let me do what I wanted, which obviated the viability of the whole thing. Great for watching YouTube by yourself on the couch though.
- musicale 4y ago> and wanted to write code on it pretty badly Fortunately in 2022 there are a number of ways to write code on the iPad pretty badly. A couple of my favorites are Pythonista (for Python) and Swift Playgrounds (for Swift and native iPad apps.)
- musicale 4y agoIt took me a while to figure out what the iPad was really great for in my workflow, but I realized it's great for anything where a keyboard just gets in the way. The iPad also excels in creative areas such as music production (Gadget and many amazing apps) and digital art (Procreate + Apple pencil.) It's also a pretty great portable game system.
