I never say “trust the experts” when the experts are economists talking about climate change.
When there are tens of millions of climate refugees, widespread drought, and compounding natural disasters (as predicted by actual climate scientists), we’re not talking about a minor setback in GDP growth. It’s civilizational collapse.
- rayiner 4y ago> tens of millions of climate refugees There were 84 million people displaced in 2020 alone. A single flood in Bangladesh can displace 1-2 million people. In 1998, when the country was a lot poorer and more fragile, 30 million people were displaced due to floods. But the country didn't collapse. Even hundreds of millions of climate migrants worldwide, over decades, will be a challenge, not "civilizational collapse." Many of these will be internal migrations, which is all the more reason for countries like Bangladesh to rapidly industrialize so it can handle these internal population movements. From 1995 to 2020, 350 million people migrated from the Chinese countryside to cities. Yes, climate change will require people to move. But it's manageable.
- realreality 4y agoClimate migration isn’t the only problem. We’re locked in for: topsoil depletion, desertification, peak mineral extraction, biodiversity collapse, complete melting of the arctic, wildfires, ocean acidification, uncontrollable methane releases from thawing permafrost, etc. You keep mentioning Bangladesh, but there’s a whole world to consider. We’ve seen what happens when global supply chains experience a brief disruption. Things are not going to get easier as natural disasters continue compounding.
