I remember doing my first electronic related projects using discrete transistors and other elements. Now it is mostly microcontrollers, integrated circuits and blocks. Which is a very good thing. The thing I could do now in a matter of days would take months / years to implement using old approach. Poor documentation is bad of course but a fact that one can assemble sizeable project integrating various existing APIs / libs holds huge value from a productivity standpoint.
