This is so fascinating to me and I guess just a reminder of the HN echo chamber.
- b3morales 4y agoSame, and I was also very surprised to learn of a professional programmer who had never heard of Lisp! Not meaning to condemn the author: apparently I have a bubble around my own head.

- oefnak 4y agoThey must have not read xkcd. Are there other ways the average programmer would hear of Lisp?
- zarathustreal 4y agoWell I guess it depends on what you consider the average programmer to be. In my circles your introduction to programming is usually SICP so Lisp (Scheme) would actually be the first language you learn
- phist_mcgee 4y agoIn my circles, if you can successfully glue together react libraries, you're a senior engineer. Some people i've worked with don't even know what imperative vs declarative programming is. As they say, you become your lowest minimum standard, and that applies to mainstream programming teams too.

- dalmo3 4y agoI'd imagine the Polish notation and lambda expressions are orders of magnitude more well know than lisp.
- brundolf 4y agoI went through an entire four-year CS degree and two years of professional work and in that time heard Lisp mentioned exactly once, as a literal historical footnote in a powerpoint slide, as "and there was this weird language with all these parentheses, now, moving on..." Then I found myself working at a lisp shop and learned a whole lot more about it
- tomgp 4y agoI had a similar experiendce on my degree course but I'd known about List before college because my father is an architect and early adopter of CAD software (we're talking 1988) and AutoCAD used AutoLISP for scripting.
