>It's about how politicians and the media co-opt her as the main spokesperson when she doesn't want that role.
While this is what I said. The big difference is that last part about how she didnt want that role. Sorry but if you travel the world and make the effort to speak. You WANT that. If you don't want to be something, you sit at home and watch tv. She wanted to be there, she took the role and is now upset about the consequences.
>She's one of the "white, Northern Europeans concerned less about the present than the future." Why focus on her instead of "activists from around the world for whom climate change was real, pressing and immediate"?
Yes I understand this and agree. The reality is that using her as a political tool blew up in their face. Now they are dealing with the consequences.
>As the article points out "In her early teens, Thunberg became sick. She ceased eating and talking. Activism, both Thunberg and her parents have said, was her salvation."
"My child has mental illness issues, you know what she needs? Not a doctor! She needs to be mocked and abused by political ideologues."
That sounds like abuse to me. Her parents are minimum 99% at fault here.
>Thunberg, now 19, is being driven by a different message: Listen to the most vulnerable — and help them build the fair future they demand.
The actual political issue of climate change is irrelevant here. There are tons of climate activists around. As I mentioned, Greta's fame isn't from her allies. She is famous because she's an easy sock puppet or perhaps a fallacious strawman of climate change. Greta had the 2 political sides just waiting for mental health to come up but you can't be the first to bring it up. Which as far as I can tell neither side ever pulled the trigger.
There's also a rule, length of wikipedia article == length of fame. She will be famous for a very long time.
Greta as now an adult has really 1 option or bet. She could sit back and hope climate change is a legitimate issue that blows up in the next few years. Al Gore predicted Florida would be under water in 2014. Perhaps next year that comes suddenly. Millions dead, major cities destroyed. Greta can then make videos about the humanitarian crisis and raise money to help them. While also pushing to do more for climate change. However, until that happens... she gets the status quo which she dislikes.
The alternative bet that would return her privacy? The reality is that she's famous because of anti-climate change ideologues. So she needs to break that. Sure bet she'll be very famous for another month or 2 but then she'll be nothing and can go about living her life. Come out against climate change. Say she was abused, she says climate change disinformation got her. That in the last time she investigated and research climate change and it's completely fake.
She'll be very popular for a tiny period of time and then go away and have her privacy back.
- eesmith 5y ago> You WANT that I don't want bugs in the house, so I clean the dishes every night before going to bed. That doesn't meant I WANT to do the dishes, only that it's the best solution I see to the problem. As I understand it, what she wants is to get people to take action against the very real dangers of global warming. Becoming a well-known activist is a means for that end. That doesn't mean she WANTS to be a well-known activist. > using her as a political tool blew up in their face Who is the "they" here? > "My child has mental illness issues," I was unable to find that quote. > "Not a doctor!" Am am unable to find that her parents refused to find a doctor. > "She needs to be mocked and abused by political ideologues" The same Wikipedia you referenced says "When she started protesting, her parents did not support her activism". > Her parents are minimum 99% at fault here Quoting https://themighty.com/2020/01/greta-thunberg-depression-environmental-activism/ https://themighty.com/2020/01/greta-thunberg-depression-envi... : ] Many comments are as shocking as they are tasteless. Reacting to an opinion piece by this author syndicated on Yahoo! News, Greta’s critics spared no mercy. ] Although she has dealt with bullying, along with the ableist and infantilizing assertion that the 17-year-old is a “child” and a “pawn for her parents and progressivism,” the latter being this author’s summation of detractors, Greta Thunberg has been unfazed by the criticism. That would include you. > Al Gore predicted Florida would be under water in 2014 Right, so you're doing the standard hearsay criticism of boring climate change denialism. No, he did not. In "An Inconvenient Truth" he 1) talked about a 20 foot rise - most of Florida is above 20 feet elevation, and 2) he never said when it would happen. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimmock_v_Secretary_of_State_for_Education_and_Skills#The_nine_inaccuracies https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimmock_v_Secretary_of_State_f... ] '"If this [West Antarctica] were to go, sea level worldwide would go up 20 feet. Greenland would also raise sea level almost 20 feet if it went. If Greenland broke up and melted, or if half of Greenland and half of West Antarctica broke up and melted, this is what would happen to the sea level in Florida:" ] Other scientific views: Gore does not say that the sea level would rise 7 metres in the immediate future, though he says that such a rise is a possibility (without specifying the timeframe). The IPCC Fourth Assessment Report predicts that the sea level could rise up to 59 cm by 2100
