I've also suffered from what I've understood to be ocular migraines, characterized by the intense ocular disruptions. So I decided to keep reading until the scotoma made it impossible to continue. I do the same thing now. I had one come on recently when I was lifting weights. I just decided to power through it. It was perhaps the most intense aural disruption I've experienced but the typical after effects (which, in my case, tend to be very bad and render me useless for 2-4 hours following an "attack") were almost completely subdued. I recall that I felt like I had a slight hangover and was able to fully function after it passed.
