Ask HN: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose to live?
- LinuxBender 4y agoI'm happy in the Rockies but if this didn't work out my next move would be Svalbard [1] in the arctic ocean. [1] - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svalbard https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svalbard

- 2143 4y agoSedna (a dwarf planet)
- kstenerud 4y agoGermany, France, Spain, Portugal, British Columbia interior, Colorado, Montana, Ecuador. In a few years, another place of choice will be Ukraine.
- linsomniac 4y agoSomewhere with a reasonably high quality of life, but a low enough cost of living that I could retire now. Maybe Costa Rica.
- b20000 4y agowhat about safety?
- linsomniac 4y agoI consider that to be a quality of life issue.
- gaws 4y agoHigh quality of life, low cost of living, safety. Pick two.
- gcheong 4y agoHow low of cost of living? A lot of people say Portugal fits that bill. Certainly different parts of Portugal fit the bill in different proportions.
- meristohm 4y agoNear family and friends. I'm deeply grateful for the privilege to have traveled all over the world in my teens and twenties (like what used to only be available to the very rich, and in my case was available because a fancy college wanted this poor white rural kid with rare hobbies), and I want that world-expansion for more young people (so that we don't travel so much in older age, and thus have a smaller carbon footprint). I moved around a lot as a child, and have lived in several cities since college, and now that I'm a parent I want to give my child more stability than I got, so they are better-able to grow up and explore out of the nest (I feel like I'm relatively stuck as a teenager, though now that I see it I'm working to grow up). Home is where the heart is, and as I steadily progress towards death, my heart is with other people. Tax-supported, public libraries are helpful for continuing the world-expansion, enhanced by the context of having experienced how similar we humans are to each other around the world.
- gcheong 4y agoA remote cabin in Alaska or similar area, maybe British Columbia.
- tomcam 4y agoLike no electricity/internet remote?
- gcheong 4y agoGood question, probably not quite that remote right off the bat but more small town/rural to start. I’ve lived in Petersburg, AK for short periods(2-3months) when I worked in a cannery there during summers out of college. Did a 1 week dog sledding vacation in Whitehorse, Yukon and spent time as a kid fly fishing up in the Kamloops area of BC. Also grew up in Astoria, OR but that’s already getting too big for me :).
- tomcam 4y agoDamn you are one hardy soul.
- jpcapdevila 4y agoSingapore! I spent a week there 7 years ago and I loved it. The city was cool and modern, yet clean and civilized. I was born in Mexico city, currently living in salt lake city Utah. I think living in Asia for a while would help me grow and expand my perception of the world.
- pmdulaney 4y agoEver since I read Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions 25 years ago I've had this notion that Chambery would be a great place to live, though I've never been to France. Has anyone reading this been there?
- tomcam 4y agoLaurel Canyon 40 years ago. Second best: a farm in Redmond, WA, so that’s where I am.
