US Army replaces cake it stole from Italian girl 77 years ago
- orangepanda 4y agoA birthday means more at 13 than at 90. She should have gotten, like, at least two.
- raxxorraxor 4y agoI think a present should be personal to the receiver as well as the giver. So they should have given her some weapons or hand grenades.
- soco 4y agoThough the "layer cake" was a Soviet weapon, no good.
- ASalazarMX 4y agoBut no anti-personnel mines.
- bitwize 4y agoIf I were 90 or older, each birthday I had would mean an awful lot to me. Probably more than my 13th birthday did, even though that was the one when I got the NES. She should have still gotten at least two cakes. Inflation, you know.
- drewcoo 4y agoAt 90, having a special ceremony for you with all the accompanying attention and well-wishing is probably a greater gift than the cake. So happy birthday to her!
- gerikson 4y agoTIL the US army has a garrison in Italy.
- throwaway0a5e 4y agoGotta deter that Swiss expansionism. The US has a lot of random facilities in Europe (many colocated with current or former military bases of the host nation) as a result of all the post-ww2 nation building and cold war geopolitics. Many were closed in the post cold war draw-down.
- tablespoon 4y ago> The US has a lot of random facilities in Europe (many colocated with current or former military bases of the host nation) as a result of all the post-ww2 nation building and cold war geopolitics. That's also super clear in the map the sibling comment posted: most of the European bases are in an arc that follows the Iron Curtain. This particular base is close to Slovenia, which used to be in the Soviet sphere.
- soco 4y agoThere was a certain expansionism which justified those bases and current events give a certain plausibility to that thought. But it's not the Swiss expansionism (this time?).
- JshWright 4y agoThe US has overseas bases in 85 different countries/territories (including a decent chunk of Europe). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_with_overseas_military_bases#United_States https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_with_oversea...
- bombcar 4y agoBut, please, the word empire is so … British … or Roman … certainly nothing we are.
- tablespoon 4y ago> But, please, the word empire is so … British … or Roman … certainly nothing we are. Not for this reason, at least, because it's not an occupying force. If the Italians asked the garrison to leave, it wouldn't go to war to stay.

- cies 4y agoperformative actions, optics... no news value.
- waffleiron 4y agoYeah, imagine the comments if this was the Russian or Chinese army. People would point it out for what it is, pure propaganda.
- cies 4y agothe hypocrisy witnessable lately in the west is shocking.
- xtiansimon 4y agoCake reparations? Is that what HN has come to? This is about the most Reddit quality post I can think of—brief, summed up in a photo (WYSIWYG), timely, though a bit of nonsense. Unless the OP is related and simply wishes to share a heartwarming personal story with us.
