What I've tended to notice about people who get trusted with more responsibility in any dimension is that they tend to do two things: 1) take responsibility without being asked. 2) find higher and higher leverage things to work on. They don't do everything perfect, but find out what their boss/employer truly values and double down. Judging by the fact that you were offered a promotion choice in the first place (albeit you think you chose the wrong door), it seems might have just forgotten how to do what you've already known in the past.
