Agreed. I have a friend who loves to brag how frugal he is. AFAIK he's not actually living his life. Not saying he needs possessions to enjoy his life but he doesn't spend on experiences either. As for my possessions, I didn't buy them for others or to show them off. I bought them to enjoy them and I do. Not really sure what the point of the advice is except maybe don't buy things to impress others.
