What is the Police and Crime Bill and how will it change protests?
- version_five 4y agoCanada doesn't allow protests anymore either. These kind of rules show how thin the veil of freedom actually was, basically the ruling class pretends to let people have freedom as long as they don't annoy anybody. There needs to be a lot more global action against our descent into authoritarianism. It will happen in the US too. Britain and it's colonies are just an easy place for a trial run.
- usrn 4y agoI'd be surprised if Canada makes it another 10 years. It sounds to me like people up there have had it.
- version_five 4y agoI'm Canadian. The issue is there are at least two completely different populations (not counting french Quebec though basically the same applies). Toronto, Montreal and maybe Ottawa + Vacounver are very liberal (in the elitist american coastal sense) and have nothing in common with the rest of the country, but control almost all of the politica because of their populations. The rest is ignored at best, occasionally leading to enough people being pissed off to try and stand up like what happened this year. You can imagine whether it's electric cars or gun control or covid restrictions, the frightened majority in Toronto has nothing in common with the rural population, but they enforce their fear on the rest of the country and use them as a scapegoat or political target whenever they can because it's easy. Meanwhile, the country has huge problems, the economy is an illusion propped up by massive government spending, healthcare is horrible and costs us more in tax than anywhere else. Our prime minister is the intellectual equivalent of a "valley girl" and refuses to engage in any substantive issues. Anyway, the behavior of our government this year really does signal to me that canada is a failed state and something needs to change.
- greyface- 4y agoIt has already happened in the US. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_speech_in_the_United_States#Time,_place,_and_manner_restrictions https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_speech_in_the_Unite...
