The problem with the rpi is it's basically a gpu with a cpu bolted on. All the power is in the gpu.
- eterevsky 5y agoIsn't it true for all the computers nowadays?
- Syonyk 5y agoNot in the same way it's true of the Pi. On most computers, the CPU is the main controller of the system, the GPU is a peripheral. On most of the Pis, the GPU is the main controller of the system, with the ARM CPUs as a peripheral. Most of the hardware controls on the Pi are the Linux kernel asking the GPU to please change something. I wrote some on it a few days ago here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31145583#31147690 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31145583#31147690
- fulafel 5y agoDepends on what abstraction level we examine. They are too cumbersome to program so aren't used much outisde games. High theoretical compute bandwidth, but end-to-end looking at application-delivered compute abilities, low expressive power and flexibility to realize our programs. Which is after all the point of programmable computers in the end.
