People who go that route consciously do so because they figure that they'll just surround themselves with those who love them and try to convert those who hate them. The conversion part never works on a large scale but the controversial individual finds its comfort zone surrounded by those who love them and should become more moderate in time. This usually happens as they realize that those who love them are in love with the character, not the person, so they intentionally deflate the character they built to see who stays and who leaves.
