I've had pretty much the same experience as you. Some devices had excellent standy power use, others were really bad (the speakers on my sound system being the worst offenders and using exactly as much power when on standby than when operating and more than my fridge…). The key takeaway here imho is: n=1, monitor your own installation and devices and don't expect there to be either an untapped pool of savings or a well optimised system based on blog posts by other people.
